View Full Version : Walgreens ~ Question How do you Walgreens pros get a very low OOP?

I am discovering WAG has some GREAT deals and I'd love to add it to my couponing repertoire. I have even lurked on this forum and seen how the regular WAG shoppers just find freebies or good deal items to roll their RR into each week and then get more for the next week. Is that the secret to low OOP? You also have to get lucky (or do you plan ahead for it) having RR that will be approximately the right amount to buy things. (the price is right, as close to the value as possible WITHOUT going over).

I suppose it helps that the sneak peeks for WAG seem to come out a lot earlier than other stores. I have started getting email about them now that I've been looking at their ad regularly.

Experts, please share your tips!

Some of the things that I do now ~ and I've only been doing Wags for about a year now...

1) Always look @ the preview ads. They sometimes can be like 3+ weeks out.

2) If I know of an upcoming week that has a FARR(s) that I want, I'll always save some RR's from the prior week to have RRs to begin the new sale. ie this week - I wanted Salon Pas (5.99 & receive 6 RR) and had a 10 RR from last week. This week - I also looked @ what else was FARR and had MM potential. Oscilloimum (can't spell it :hysterical:) is a 2 MM with Q + there is a 2 IP (PDF) on their site - soooo, unlimited rolling between Salon Pas and OScilloxxx, if I wanted too - well, this is IF the store has stock. As well, in checking different Wags forum sites - discovered that the Omega (9.99; 10 RR) had/has a $3/1 MQ inside the box... more MM potential.

In going from Oscilloxxx to Salon Pas - I'm forced to find $3.01 of filler every-time (about $1.30 ish OOP)... BUT when go from Salon Pas to Oscilloxxx, arghh - my oop is 2.xx each time ~ tax always kills me here in the land of 9.5% sales tax :giggle2:

3) I've watched Wags staff with their RR's :whistle67: and uh, am always shocked that they always have their RR's go dead ~ they buy what's FARR and use the RR to get what they want, effectively having the RR die. I kinda view RR's as funny money and just need to float (roll) some every so often.

4) You always need a cheapie filler... I've learned to always look @ the ad for the cheapie item on sale, as it'll most likely be my filler for that week. I don't like @ .39, .50, .69 items the same anymore :hysterical:

This week, I used the reynolds and wax paper as fillers. I think that I must have gone to WAGS about 6 times this week...lol. So, I've got quite a bit of foil and paper!Melissa, also keep in mind that some of us will NEVER have $.03 OOP scenarios. My state is a pre-coupon tax state, so I have to pay tax, which always blows my low OOP. I've found I've cut way back on Wagging just because I was paying a bunch of tax for items I really didn't want or need (Celsius tea or Pill Glide spray, anyone??).Melissa, also keep in mind that some of us will NEVER have $.03 OOP scenarios. Same here. The tax makes it not worth it unless it's something you really would use.

This is the case here. Getting the great moneymaker with the Omega Factor 3, but I have to pay $0.86 tax on each box (and realistically about $2 OOP because I'm not that good :rolleyes24:) But that's still way cheaper than the other Fish Oil vitamins I have bought (generally I pay $1.50 a bottle for those with the best coupon deal I've found) and my husband has to take them every day.

It takes a LOT of thinking to figure it all out!

SFShopper - I've been going back and forth from SalonPas and Omega Factor 3, it's the same deal, with the SalonPas I can get a $0.90 OOP but with the Omega Factor 3 it's close to $2 because the subtotal is $1 + filler + sales tax. But still, $3 isn't too bad for the SalonPas, Omega Factor 3, and $3 in free stuff (I got two cases of bottled water, some Tilex, cookies so far)Drive to Missouri

LOL

I probably do as good as you.

A low OOP (Out Of Pocket) is nice, do not get me wrong.

I do not think that it is a good idea to attempt to always get a low OOP.

It can easily lead to Walgreens burnout.

More emphasis should be on purchasing items that you need instead of want.

I ?red flag? anything that can go bad (expire).

It is no fun purchasing something and then having to toss it out because it goes bad.

Nebraska is closer to me (no idea about their sales tax), though I end up in/near Missouri pretty regularly but those are the stores with the new rewards card system so that always confuses me too. They get SOME of the RR deals, but not all of them. Some of them just end up as points on the rewards card.

When I was growing up in the KC area but on the Kansas side, we would always buy gas in Missouri because the taxes on gas were lower so it would be $0.10 a gallon less, at least.

I am lucky...cause down in Joplin...they don't have the stupid card system yet.

The first time I went to walgreens in joplin vs kansas..I was shocked how much less my OOP was.

Not sure on Nebraska's tax. or if they do it pre coupon or post coupon...

This is why I don't do Walgreens anymore. I am thinking about trying to get back into it, just because I feel like I haven't been doing as much couponing the last 6 months and I need to since I don't really have a job. But I hate having to buy filler all the time and getting things I don't really need in the process, just to "roll" the RRs. Tax kills me as well on my OOP.

I pretty much plan it out before I walk in the store. And take my phone as a calculator in there. My favorite fillers are sometimes EGGS! Sometimes they have them .99, and I feel alot better about using something I will use as filler rather than buy 5 .10 pencils that will go in the trash ;) I like doing smaller deals too...I used to go in and get EVERY RR deal just because it was a .50-1.00 MM. I won't do that anymore unless it's a $4+MM for something I do or don't need :) What I LIKE to do
for example:
Saying Item 1 is $8, get $8 RR back
and I have a $4 q which = $4MM
What I LIKE to do, is get either my milk, eggs or bacon with that combo.

So I get Item 1, 1/2 gal milk, 1 dozen eggs after the $4 q and $8 RR back, I still profit, and have free milk and eggs. Does that make sense? I used to only do RR items and roll the RR but I feel if I have a great MM, that is the time to get those items you can't land free at the store. Stocking up on Free milk and eggs from Wag's...who'd have thunk it?

Doing very little WAGs. The electrasol is a good deal....even without the RR's...so I've been twice this week so far.

I may roll those RR's into another...or I might just purchase something else I need. But beyond a couple weeks before christmas...and the around Thanksgiving...I have done very little WAGS shopping...as it just doesn't seem worth the pain.

Thanks for this comment. This has been a lesson learned for me in couponing too. Even while getting good deals, I'm still spending money and it's embarrassing that there were months I spent less on groceries BEFORE couponing because I used to make a list and just go for what I needed that week (and shop sales, which I never realized were when the good coupon deals were going on). Rachelle - I was thinking of doing just that this week, getting some cheese and stuff (they have Kraft Slices for a decent price) with my overage. I do need the Omega Factor 3 stuff, so that's what's got me going in this week (besides Electrasol too, which I always need!)

Milk. I should get some milk.

when I get the chance to shop in areas where they compute tax AFTER coupons, I take advantage of it. I like to shop in TX with my free coupons since I pay nothing when my subtotal comes up to 0.00

at this stage where I refuse to pay for ANY HBA item, I buy them if I have coupons that will give some profit after using coupons and they're FARR. If I have to pay even s/t for HBA items, I pass on the deal.

I also watch out of items that give overage. Currently, I've been buying the Acai berry BOGOF @ 10.99 using the $2 inserts MQs plus $5 IVCs. I stock up on items we use a lot and I'd still buy even without a coupon. But when they're better than free, I make an effort to find them. I used the overage to buy the FARR items so I just paid tax on them and got my RRs which I can now use to buy other items.

I'm very glad our stores listened to clamor for cheap fillers that they have come up with .05 and .10 candies by the register. They come in handy when I want to use several RRs to bring down my total OOP close to 0.00.

I keep trying to get into wags, i have RR's now to try and roll, it gets confusing with the fillers and all that. Tax is what kills me too! I shoulda went back in the other day when i go the oscillum the $2 coupon didnt scan and she said it expired. but it didnt expire till dec this year not last yr but i didnt check till i got in the car and decided against fighting it since it beeped anyhow. even though it states any. Ive also messed up on deals during black friday with the herbal essence getting all in one transaction. I wish i had the finish/electrasol coupons for the deal this week! That is something i NEED. but i didnt get those coupons :( half the time i end up using the RR's on something I need and stop trying wags.
